Double-Ridged Horn Antenna
Double-Ridged Horn Antenna delivers extremely wide bandwidth and high sensitivity across microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. Commonly used for broadband antenna measurements, EMC testing, radar research, RF laboratories and advanced microwave communication systems.
High-Performance Double-Ridged Horn Antennas for Ultra-Wideband Systems
AO Microwave’s high-precision double-ridged horn antennas are designed to deliver extremely broad operating bandwidths (typically 1 to 18 GHz or 18 to 40 GHz) with consistent gain and low reflection. Precision-fabricated from high-grade aluminum alloys via CNC milling, these horns feature two flared metal ridges running symmetrically along the top and bottom internal walls. Operating up to 40 GHz with standard SMA and 2.92mm (K) connector options, our double-ridged horns achieve a low typical input VSWR of < 1.50:1, high aperture efficiency, and stable cross-polarization isolation across the entire operating band.
By utilizing the impedance-matching capabilities of the internal ridges, our antennas lower the cutoff frequency of the dominant TE10 mode while keeping higher-order mode cutoff frequencies high. They are critical for broadband EMC compliance testing, ultra-wideband radar target simulation, and electronic warfare (EW) direction-finding systems.

The Electromagnetics of Ridged Waveguide Loading
Double-ridged horn antennas achieve their broad operating bandwidth by using internal flared metal ridges. In a standard rectangular waveguide, the single-mode bandwidth is limited. Adding ridges concentrates the electric field in the center gap between the ridges, which lowers the cutoff frequency of the dominant TE10 mode.
Simultaneously, the ridges keep the cutoff frequencies of higher-order modes (such as TE20) relatively high. This expands the single-mode operating bandwidth, allowing a single double-ridged horn to cover multi-octave bands (such as 1 to 18 GHz) without experiencing moding or beam splitting.
Target Applications & Operational Advantages
By providing predictable radiation patterns and high power handling, our double-ridged horn antennas secure critical measurement setups:
EMC Compliance Testing (IEC 61000-4-3)
Function: Radiates high-power RF fields inside test chambers to evaluate product immunity.
Advantage: Exceptional bandwidth allows for wide frequency sweeps (e.g., 1 to 18 GHz) without needing to switch antennas, reducing test time.
Broadband Radar Target Simulation
Function: Radiates simulated radar return pulses in laboratory and outdoor test ranges.
Advantage: High aperture efficiency and low VSWR (<1.50) ensure consistent and repeatable measurements.
EW Direction-Finding Systems
Function: Monitors broadband spectrum to detect and locate hostile transmitter signals.
Advantage: Stable cross-polarization isolation and predictable gain curves enable accurate direction finding.
