Understanding Backshort Cavity Tuning in Right-Angle Adapters
Right-angle adapters rely on a tuned resonant cavity behind the coaxial probe, known as the backshort cavity. The distance between the shorted backplate and the probe center is physically designed to be exactly one-quarter of the guide wavelength (λg/4) at the center operating frequency. This short-circuit reflects the reverse wave in phase with the forward wave, maximizing coupling efficiency into the coaxial connector.
At high millimeter-wave frequencies—such as the V-band (WR-15) or W-band (WR-10)—even a tiny machining error of ±0.02 mm in this cavity length will shift the optimum resonant point. This shift degrades performance at the band edges, causing VSWR spikes and increased insertion loss. AO Microwave uses precision sub-micron CNC milling to lock in this critical dimension, delivering flat return loss performance across the entire waveguide band.
